When you register a domain, you must give it 24-48hrs for DNS changes.
Sometimes as well, what happened with my site was that I had to wait for the payment to clear before it changed and started working.

you always have to find a domain that's not already owned by someone else.
you can go here:
http://freehostia.com/domains.html
and check if it's available

You have to pay to use a domain.

You can use a subdomain such as

site.freehostia.com

(where site can be whatever you want)
