You have to named your homepage as the index.html or index.php file. Also you are able to see many useful information about html following the URL below:

http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

Also you have to to use the normal HTML tags in your page like <html></html>.

rename your index.html to index.shtml

the .shtml tells the server that it has SSI(server side includes) in it.

the rest of your questions depend on how you code it, so will probably answer themselves

In order to use SSI to include another file, you need to have the file with the include code named with a .shtml extension. The file that is being included doesn't have to be .shtml though.
I think you should use the <html> and </html> tags as well. Although as far as I know, it'll work without them... I've just gone into a blank page and typed "test" and it worked without the html tags, I could make the word test a link too.
But, it's good practice to use the <html> and </html> tags. ;)

No problem, glad I was helpful. I'm a girl btw, and yes I am slightly crazy at times ;)

To clarify though: you don't need to use <html> and </html> tags in the file you're including. You should in the index though. That's what I meant, sorry about the confusion, if there was any.

If the index is named index.shtml and you have the right code for the inclusion of your other file, it should work... but it has to be exactly right, if you put a space where there shouldn't be one (in the line that does the inclusion), it won't work. It's kinda sensitive.

Hope it works out for you :)

:S That's weird. I use includes but the file to be included I use is a .txt file, maybe if you do that it will work? I don't know.. good luck
