If you are looking to activate SSL for one of your domains/subdomains, follow these steps:
(1) Dedicated IP
In order to use SSL you need a dedicated IP for the domain/subdomain that will have SSL enabled. You can purchase a dedicated IP from the "Add Services/Upgrades" menu on the left side on your web hosting control panel.
Once you have purchased the upgrade you will notice a new section called IP Addresses in the Site Options category. Go to the IP Addresses section to request your dedicated IP. When ready go to the Subdomain Manager and edit the domain/subdomain, which you want to activate SSL for and select the dedicated IP.
(2) SSL Certificate Requests
Before you can purchase an SSL certificate you need to generate a certificate request in the "SSL Certificate Requests" section on your control panel. Once you enter the necessary details in the form and press "Generate Request", two text files will be created - a certificate request (CSR) and a certificate key.
(3) SSL Certificate
FreeHostia does not sell SSL certificates, so you will have to purchase one from a company that sells SSL certificates (search Google for SSL certificate). To buy the certificate you will have to present the CSR (certificate request) generated at your FreeHostia control panel. The company that issues the certificate for you will give you two files - the certificate itself and a CA (certificate authority).
(4) Install the SSL certificate
To complete the process you go to the Subdomain Manager and edit your domain/subdomain - the last option is for SSL - from the drop-down menu you select "Upload SSL certificate" - four text fields will display where you paste the content of:
- the certificate request (get it from the "SSL Certificate Requests" section;
- the certificate key (also available in the "SSL Certificate Requests" section);
- the certificate itself;
- the CA. _________________ Cheers,
