Hi I've only ever done basic website ftp stuff and am completely new to using databases etc so I must apologise for the basic questions. I want a phpBB forum. I was going to go with forumer.com but I don't want their ads or to be locked in - but then again I don't want to be locked in here either. So my question is if I use a phpBB forum here, how easy is it to move it in the future? I see phpBB has an option to backup your database in the admin section. So could I just backup the database that way and upload it to a different webhost in the future? Or is it more complicated? If I'm using my own domain here, then move the forum, would changing the DNS to the new host mean all links in to the forum would still work. I don't really need detailed answers, just to know what's possible. Once I have a forum up an running I can start to learn how it works myself |

I know it is possible to transfer the a type of backup from PhpBB forums, but I don't know exactly how it's done.. I think you have to log into Myphpadmin to be able to back it up for another database. |

the phpbb backup utility should do it fine, but i'd use myphpadmin, export the database, and save it upload the SAME files (not a newer version) to the new host, open the .sql file you expoted/saved with notepad, change the domain name(if it changed), then import it to the new site. thats about all it takes.

One other question Can I use my own sub-forum here with the free account? right now mysite.com is pointing to my main site with a different host. Can I setup forums.mysite.com with a phpBB board here? The controls seem to be setup only for if you want to point your main domain here. |

Yes you can, be sure to point the DNSes correctly though... |

But when I go to My Domains >> Hosted and try to type a sub-domain in the "Domain Name to Host" I get an error if I try to use a sub-domain So I typed in my main domain there, and created a sub-domain that matches the one I've set up with my register is that the right way? |
