The Guide to building good site's.
  • To have a nice proffesional look
    • Flash text. strange banners. are all signs of amateur designers.
    • To keep a single style to your site - i've seen many a site which go from a nice index to a horrible style.
    • Copyrights. Shoving loads of the Copyright and reserved symbols is again amateurisc. The easiest thing is to just have one line at the bottem saying copyrights of blahblahblah
  • Being Multi-Lingual. You yourself don't need to be multi-lingual but try and make your site multi-lingual.
    • Have a selectioni process to determine the language the user is using.(storing this in a cookie might be conveniant)
    • Then make all text pass through language functions(probably best done in PHP). This way all users can view in a language they know.
    • How to get the text in their language.- use translation software.
  • Don't get to big for your boots -> don't act as if your a large site with loads of people visiting a day. Proffesional is good but try not to go over the top
  • Different Web Languages Integration -> try to integrate different web languages together.

    PHP+SQL+JAVASCRIPT+HTML+FLASH

    is a great combination.

That's all folks

:!: :!: :!: :wink:

Great guidelines to follow for the layout. Now for the code structure, I really reccomend tableless design (using div's for layout rather than tables) and external style sheets (.css files).

Tableless design by no means you don't want any table on your site, but put those tables where they are supposed to be. Tables are for data that is best output in a table manner, not to determine where the banner on your website should stay.

Using div's and external style sheets saves you bandwidth and the site is quicker for the user to load, and that's a pretty good thing.

Well I tend keep a web design pretty simple at the beginning and as the site grows and have already gained some momentum, then I'll definitely be looking for some Flash and other PHP scripts and programs. But thanks for those wonderful tips shared above. Will definitely use them some day.

Good site is known for its usefulness, nice images, good content and reachable urls. The website should be open quickly.

This guide is much too basic to truly be able to understand building a good website. Obviously, the first thing we want is for the site to look good, but there are hundreds even thousands of contributing factors to what makes a good site. We need to do research on SEO, Social Media, Search Engines, User Interface, Security, etc. There are also issues like compatibility with email marketing software and plugins. Too much to know to put up such a short list.

Be careful with such old tips. Web Design rules are changing very quickly. General hints are appreciated but the details can be outdated...

I have a Windows Media File that I would like to display on my website. I would like to make it appear as a small picture that if clicked on will play the video.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Specific coding would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jennie

If you have a website-building application like Adobe Dreamweaver, it is not extremely complex to create a website from scratch.

I really need to re-do my website (which is off-line most the time because Freehostia keep claiming that it gets to much traffic but all other evidence is that this isn't the case). I'm a web site designer so I want something fancy that looks decent in pretty well all browsers and doesn't look like it was made from template. My speciality is SVG. Any ideas?

Perhaps I'm missing something but I find divs to be clumsy and tend to do weird things that make no sense. For example:

<table>
<tr>
<td>stuff</td>
<td>more stuff</td>
</tr>
</table>
<hr />

Does what I expect, it displays two blocks of stuff, side by side with an hr the width of the page underneath.

<div>stuff</div>
<div>more stuff</div>
<hr />

Should do the same (which is what I probably want) but it puts a very short hr at the top, between the blocks of stuff (no hr at the bottom). This makes no sense :!:
