The mail service is not available for the free hosting plans, respectively it is not possible to send messages directly from the server by using sendmail or the standard PHP mail() function as well. Regarding Google Apps, you could setup the MX records of your domain name to their system and use their mail service, but your Joomla will not be able to send messages by using their SMTP servers since the free hosting accounts could not open outgoing connections to remove servers. With an upgrade to a paid hosting account you will obtain the following benefits:
- no file size limit (500 KB with the free plan)
- outgoing mail servers - SMTP ON
- detailed visitor and traffic statistics
- access and error logs
- remote connections (ability to use RSS feed readers, etc.)
