Anyone know if co.cc is legitimate or a scam? They offer a free domain, but that seems too good to be true.

Thanks

Ive been using .co.cc for 2 years. they are great for sites that you can refer too offline like very small business or artists, but if you're looking for SEO! always go with premium domain names, E,g, .com .net!

.co.cc is actually offering free sub-domains, not domains.

it is the same as your <name>.freehostia.com they just make it look like it is a top level domain by only using 2 letters in their domain. for example .com.au is a top level domain. however, .cc is the top level domain for .co.cc

so no, not a scam.. just a little manipulation with exploiting domain names. They provide the service that they offer. A scam would be if you used their services built a brand name using it, then they take your subdomain and point it to inappropriate sites. Making you look bad.

However, my suggestion would be that if you are even remotely serious in building a website. you lease your own top level domain. what is it? 9.95/year? you spend more going and getting a rack of bbq ribs, which would feed you for a single meal. (skip tea, register your own domain!)

I'm currently on my second of my free personal domains with them and so far, they haven't failed me or given me any issues.

I am bumping this thread to make a couple of point that I felt stood out in this conversation. First, don't use anything besides com, net, org, or edu if you ever want your site to be visible in the search engines. Also, you need to understand the difference between a domain and a sub-domain. They are giving you free space in their domain if that makes sense. I have also found that integrating my social media marketing campaign and email marketing software with awkward subdomains has been a bit more tricky than expected.

For most sites, paying is the way to go.
