 Post subject: customized MX?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 20, 2006 1:29 am
if i sign up for a free account, would i be able to have my MX and CNAME records customized? i am currently paying a two-year plan for my email (with my domain name) so want to keep using that service while i have my website hosted with you (maybe).

You can edit the MX record, but not the CNAME record, I am sorry.

hi,

sorry for not responding right away--been busy. why can't i change my CNAME records and will that affect my ability to use email with another service (under my domain name) while having my website hosted here?

just changing the mx record should do the trick (I had it setup using a GoDaddy email service, it worked fine, although took about 48 hours to propagate which is normal, but sooo long when you sit there whaiting for it).

I do have a question of my own though:

Is it possible to add a secondary MX record something along the lines of:

MX value=10 serv3.freehostia.com
MX value=20 mail.otherserver.com

So that when someone sends an email at me@mysite.com and serv3.freehostia.com is down and cannot receive mail, mail.otherserver.com will handle the receival instead (sort of having more than one MX record)

Yes, you can set more than one MX record.

How do you weight them though?

In this example you see the two mail servers are given a weighting or priority, 10 and 20 respectively. That is what I meant by their weighting. It shows which is the preferred mail server. The one with 10 will be tried first.

In the control panel, you set the MX records in the Custom DNS Records section. Here there are only three fields: hostname, type - e.g. A or MX, and value.

So you could add another MX record, but there I do not see anyhere to specify the priority for them.

So what would happen if I added another MX record? Which one would be tried first? Anyone want to try it?

Maybe create a subdomain which you won't use and set its MX records. Once it's done use this to check: http://www.dnsstuff.com/ and select MX from the DNS lookup form.

How would you add another one in the first place (or is it only available on paid plans). Cause under my DNS panel I have no way of adding another MX:

I just have done that but I don't know what server to put on the subdomain MX record (POP3 or SMTP?). I choose SMTP.
